What is Encria?
Encria is an iPhone and iPad app that turns photographed or scanned handwritten pages into clean, editable digital text. You capture a page — or import several images at once, which become a single transcription — then verify, edit, copy or share the result. It is built for handwriting rather than printed documents: the full flow is described on converting handwriting to text.
What does the AI improvement do, and can I keep the exact words?
Both, always. Encria first keeps the raw transcription — exactly what was read, word for word — and it stays available for verification and recovery. On top of it, a switch called “Improve after transcription”, on by default, adds one AI pass that repairs reading errors, fragments and broken sentences while preserving your spelling, abbreviations and writing style. A dependent “Correct spelling” switch, off by default, additionally fixes spelling, agreement, punctuation and grammar without changing your meaning or tone. Turn the improvement off and you keep the exact words as read.
How accurate is the transcription?
Handwriting recognition can make mistakes, and Encria never asks you to take its word for it. The engine scores every word it reads, and the ones it is unsure about are underlined in the transcription, right under the photo of your page: you tap an underlined word to fix it instead of re-reading the whole page yourself, and that fix is reused in later transcriptions. We publish no accuracy figure: handwriting varies far too much for a single number to mean anything. Trying your own pages on the free tier is the only test that settles it.
Does Encria learn my handwriting?
Yes, on your device. The corrections you make are remembered locally and reused in later transcriptions, and with Encria Pro, reusable writing profiles capture your vocabulary, proper nouns and abbreviations. The more pages you verify, the fewer of the same corrections you have to make again.
Which languages can Encria read?
The language of a page is detected automatically, so you never have to pick one before transcribing. The app interface itself is available in English and French. We do not publish a list of supported handwriting languages: the reliable way to check yours is to transcribe a page on the free tier and look at the result.
Privacy & data
Do I need an account to use Encria?
No. There is no Encria account, no sign-up and no password: your documents live in a local library on your iPhone or iPad. You browse your history, edit and export from the app itself.
Are my notes stored on your servers?
No. Your pages, transcriptions, corrections and writing profiles are stored locally on your device, and our server keeps no durable database of your documents or images. The content of your pages is not logged. The privacy policy sets out exactly what is sent and what is kept.
What happens to my images during a transcription?
Images are sent only when you explicitly start a transcription. They go to our server, which relays them to our text-recognition provider — currently Mistral AI — to produce the result. If you enable AI enhancement, the images and OCR text also pass temporarily through OpenRouter to the selected model, on routes that require zero data retention. The privacy page covers each step in detail.
Does Encria track me?
Only anonymous, aggregate analytics: app lifecycle and a few product events, such as starting a transcription or opening the subscription screen. These services never receive your page images, transcription text, corrections or profile names, and none of it is used for advertising or cross-app tracking. App analytics can be switched off at any time in Encria’s settings, and this website sets no tracking cookie.

Is Encria free?
The free tier includes 10 transcribed pages per month, with the same raw and AI-improved text, flagged uncertain words and local library as Pro. A single transcription holds up to 3 pages on the free tier and up to 20 on Pro, and reusable writing profiles are a Pro feature. Encria Pro raises the monthly allowance to 500 pages, for €5.99 a month or €39.99 a year. The pricing page lays out what each plan includes.
What if I only need extra pages occasionally?
With or without a subscription, Encria sells page credits as one-time purchases: 100 pages for €1.99. They do not expire, which suits occasional bursts — a stack of old notebooks, a batch of handwritten notes to transcribe before a deadline — better than a monthly plan you would cancel straight after.
How do I cancel Encria Pro?
Encria Pro is billed through your App Store account, so cancellation happens in your Apple account settings rather than in the app. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. We never receive or store your payment details.
Devices & requirements
Which devices does Encria run on?
Encria is an iPhone and iPad app and requires iOS 18 or later. There is no Android or web version. If you are weighing it against a tool you already have, the comparison with Google Lens explains what a general-purpose scanner does, and does not do, with handwriting.
Does Encria work offline?
Transcription runs through our processing API, so a page needs a connection to be transcribed. Everything already transcribed stays in the local library on your device, where you can read and edit it. If a transcription fails or something looks wrong, support answers by email.
